Believe it or not some women go right into menopause without any disturbing symptoms.
Most women, however, do experience symptoms that bring them into the health food store (where they often get too many expensive products) or to the doctor’s office.
Most synthetic hormones given to menopausal women contain Estradiol and Progesterone. Possible side effects may include: water retention, breast tenderness, risk of developing breast cancer, and the remote possibility of developing uterine cancer. There are now many different synthetic estrogen products, some supposedly more natural than others. You can discuss the different ones at your appointment.
Bioidentical hormones are produced from plant sources without changes in the chemical structure that renders most synthetic drugs toxic in some way. In my practice, when a woman desires bioidentical hormones, I combine all three estrogens with progesterone and testosterone to achieve an optimal balance.
Since every woman is unique and her experience of menopause is different there is a particular combination that is right for her. Most women will experience no weight gain in using bioidentical hormones and no breast tenderness if the right dosage is prescribed.
